Entries are already coming in thick and fast, so if you haven't yet done so please log in to www.runnersworld.co.uk/sleepwalker and make sure you don't miss out. Just a reminder of what we have here after 4 years: 96% approval rating 95% would do it again 100% safety record Here is some of the previous feedback to show your friends - if you left it then thank you! The 4th annual running of this event didn't dissapoint, with sub zero temperatures and impassable road conditions trying their best to derail the event. Sleepwalkers are obviously made of strong stuff, as year after year you turn out and run, despite the elements - having said that though, crisp clear skies and light snow cover to reflect a million stars might be considered an easy year by some To everyone who came to this year's Sleepwalker, thanks. It's you, runners and marshalls, who make this event what it is - and it looks like you like it! See some of the comments made, plus many more sent to me personally... Words cannot describe any of the terrain or weather conditions we experienced, Rain, Sleet, Snow, Fog, Rivers, Mud & anything else you can imagine. Training is optional for a 20mile off road night run, but theres nothing that can prepare you for the variety of conditions you will meet. You just wouldnt drag yourself around the route in the day if you had a choice. So why do it at Night? Because it seemed a good idea at the time! Excellent markings on the route to give running it a chance but not to obvious so to make it a challenge. One of this years highlights. In short: Great event. Even better than last year's Hello duncan, Worse race I've done(terrain wise), but I'm glad I cracked it. Great event, a real challenge as there is nothing easy about it. Long climbs, driving snow, sleet and rain. To say it wet just doesn't do it justice, more like running along streams through bogs and mud with a failing head torch, great fun!! Best bit was running across the open grond between cp3 & 4. Snow complete darkness thick fog wind and no one around, it was brilliant. In short: great fun, great weather(rain, snow, fog)and great organisation.
In short: Don't expect much sleep - some walking may be on the cards though..
No doubt you will all be fully recovered after a good night's sleep, and out training again, or perhaps a couple of days off is in order? Whichever it is, I sincerely hope to see you all next year.
Once again, thanks for making Sleepwalker a success - it really is great to see so many smiling faces despite the challenging conditions!
Thanks so much for organising a fantastic event. i really enjoyed it and am sad to be home! I hope everyone got in safely.
Hi Duncan, I ran the sleepwalker night race this weekend. I tried to recce the course the previous weekend but weather put an end to it after about an hour.. Almost glad I didn’t do the full recce as I would have known something of what was to come and may not have turned up! What an awesome challenge! I really enjoyed it, thank you all so much for your hard work and excellent organisation. On the night, I vowed not to do it again, but on waking the next morning was already deciding what I was going to do differently next time. I’ll definitely be there next year and will be on target with my projected time!! Speaking with Men's Fitness events editor Lucy Miller, it became clear some there thought Sleepwalker was at the 'extreme' end of running events!I suppose that could be true - but equally important is that all the safety measures are in place, including the very carefully designed course, to enable everyone with certain outdoor sklls to 'give it a go'.It was quite an honour to be one of only 5 events chosen to appear in the current events guide, after all there are so many races nowadays it means we must be getting something right and it's really encouraging for the future of this race. The magazine article needs to be clarified in one respect though - it says "run 32km through the Brecon Beacon's National Park before dawn" which is OK except for the last bit - I would like you all back before 11pm (2300hrs) please, after all Talybont on Usk boasts some fine Public Houses and it's not like you don't get to use a headtorch!! Maybe MF would be surprised to know that 100% of last years runners made it inside the 5 hour time limit.. See you in Talybont on Usk...
